The role of sponsors for an athlete

Sponsors can support the growth and development of athletes in several ways. First, they can provide resources that allow athletes to fully focus on their athletic careers. Second, they contribute to strengthening the athlete’s personal brand by adding value to their image and helping to differentiate them from competitors in the market. In my specific case, I have been collaborating with adidas and Giti Tire since 2017 and 2022, respectively.

 

 

The Resources Provided

The resources a sponsor can provide are divided into two categories. The first is direct financial support, which enables the athlete to cover expenses such as training, travel, equipment, and competitions. The second is material support, often provided as in-kind sponsorships, where the sponsor supplies goods or services instead of cash. This may include sports apparel, equipment, access to facilities, or professional services like physiotherapy or specialist consultations.

Personal Branding and Consistency

When an athlete builds a recognizable and respected image, they become a unique brand, with their own identity and distinctive characteristics. A fundamental part of this identity depends on the brands with which they choose to collaborate. For this reason, it is essential that the values of commercial partners are perfectly aligned with those of the athlete, ensuring consistency and authenticity in the relationship. Only in this way can the athlete truly reflect and amplify their values through partnerships, transforming them into a powerful tool for communication and growth of their personal brand.
